“In strengthening the priest, you strengthen the whole Church…strengthen the priest and you strengthen the whole foundation, you strengthen everything in the Church”. (Father Gerald Fitzgerald, s.P.)
“Support your priests with your love and prayers, that they may be shepherds after Christ’s heart.” (Pope Francis)
The Seven Sisters Apostolate was started over a decade ago by a lay woman, Janette Howe, at her home parish in St. Paul, Minnesota. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, she discerned the invitation to commit one holy hour in prayer, once a week, specifically for her Pastor. During her prayer time the words, “seven sisters”, was impressed in her spirit. Soon six other women joined with her in this beautiful albeit “silent’ ministry. Under the direction of her Pastor, Janette invited seven other parishes in her diocese to start similar apostolates. Today there are over 3200 Seven Sisters Apostolates across the country and internationally.
A Seven Sisters Apostolate may form when at least seven women volunteer to form a core group (one for each day of the week) for the sole PURPOSE of praying for a priest. Each core member is asked to commit to ONE Holy Hour, ONCE per week, praying for ONE Priest, for ONE Year. The first core group prays for the parish Pastor. Additional core groups of at least seven can offer prayer for a non-parish priest or bishop. This gift of spiritual support should include praying for the priest’s sanctification, health, and his deepening devotion to Our Blessed Mother. Any adult can serve in the apostolate, including men, as long as the initial core group consists of at least seven women. One member will volunteer to serve as Coordinator or “Anchoress” for at last two years if possible. On June 16, 2023, on The Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the charter group of Seven Sisters Apostolate of St. Jose Sanchez del Rio Catholic Church was activated. It is our prayer that, God-willing, this beautiful, albeit “silent”, but powerful ministry continues to thrive in this parish with new and renewed commitments.
Right now, our priests and bishops need intensified spiritual support! It has always been imperative that we as faithful Catholics activate our sacred privilege and responsibility to provide them this spiritual support. If you are already graced with a praying heart for the priesthood, or desire to grow in your commitment to pray for priests, please discern the call to this most crucial and sacred apostolate.
You are needed for such a time as this!
